When I was doing my graduation I faced the same dilemma and searched for an answer. When I asked about it to my English professor, he advised me to volunteer at an NGO where he was also volunteering. As a student, it was one of the best things I could do during my free time and it was a great learning curve for me. I volunteered for a food NGO for 3 years and it was an unforgettable experience. I came to meet new people from different backgrounds and got an opportunity to work on addressing some of the important social issues in our country. If you are looking to do something good for society I would recommend volunteering at an NGO. I am sharing with you some of the things I have done while volunteering that you may also take part in if you wish to volunteer. The food NGO I was volunteering for, was providing lunch to students under the school-meal program. I used to visit the schools to deliver the freshly cooked food and got opportunities to spend time with children. We also took part in the meal preparation and the packaging of food. The food had to be packed in neat containers and transported safely regularly. When a natural calamity happened in our state, many temporary shelter homes were opened and we started a community kitchen to provide food to people in these shelter homes. We also used to provide food to orphanages and old age homes and prepare special food during special occasions. One day we provided food to patients and bystanders in medical college and on that day I realized the difficulties faced by them to get good food while at the hospital. What I felt when I volunteered for an NGO is that we all have to do something for the betterment of society. We should not be sitting in the hope that someone else will work for the development of our society. From my experience volunteering at an NGO is one of the best ways to contribute to society. You can also choose some other way to contribute to our society if you find something better for you. For those who are not able to volunteer at an NGO or any other organization, you can make donations to education from the comfort of your home or office. Thus everyone can contribute something to our society in one way or the other. Click here to edit. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are not-for-profit organizations working towards the development of our society. NGO members are usually a group of like-minded people who dedicate their time towards uplifting people from different communities. NGOs are providing support to the government in combating various socio-economic issues, and have been a natural partner in this endeavour. From my research, I have found that there are currently NGOs functioning in key sectors like food, farming, education, social justice, health, infrastructure development, and many more. Let’s learn more about some of these:
After conducting extensive research and from my personal experience, I believe that NGOs are playing a big role in the development of our nation by addressing the various socio-economic issues. I would encourage all my readers to learn more about NGOs or charities nearby and consider extending a hand of support to help out members of your society and brighten their lives in some small way. The pillars of development: Literacy and nourishment
It is common knowledge that education and nourishment are two important pillars that must be regularly strengthened for the development and flourishment of any nation. When individuals of a nation are not provided with the necessary levels of nutrition, they begin experiencing stunted physical and mental growth, along with other serious health issues related to malnourishment. Individuals affected by malnourishment also experience poor levels of concentration and high levels of fatigue. Malnourishment and illiteracy in India India has recently slipped further down the global hunger index, and ranks 101 amongst the 116 countries on the index. Research has shown that a large part of the malnourishment problem in India begins from childhood, as innumerable young children in India do not receive the necessary nutrients for development. Donate money to ngo Malnourishment amongst young children has been a rampant issue primarily in the destitute communities of India and continues to be one of the leading causes of child morbidity. Lakhs of school-going children in India attend classes on an empty stomach. This classroom hunger often drags into adulthood, and malnourishment continues to have dire effects on communities. These children usually perform poorly in academics, and a large majority do not even complete their education due to these reasons. Many drop out of schools in search of jobs and end up working as child labours, leading to becoming illiterates. Trends have also shown that malnourishment during childhood leads to less productivity even if they join the workforce as adults, pushing them deeper into the state of poverty. This vicious cycle creates a serious socio-economic problem, which must be addressed at the ground level to push our nation towards development. Mid-day meal scheme as a solution The mid-day meal initiative was launched by the Government of India in 1995 to curb the issues of malnourishment and illiteracy. Under this scheme, school-going children are provided with wholesome and nourishing meals once a day. The mid-day meal scheme also came under the purview of the National Food Security Act, 2013. Since then, the program has begun to show significant positive effects, as rates of classroom hunger and childhood malnourishment have reduced. The secondary effect that the scheme has had is that the meals provided act as an incentive for families to send their children to school. So, more students have been completing their education, which helps them to join a better workforce and earn handsomely. This has in turn improved the rates of literacy across the country. Philanthropy refers to the desire to promote the welfare of others. The undisputed fact is that many people of our country still do not have access to basic necessities, and live in a state of poverty. There are multiple NGOs, charitable trusts and independent individuals who work on a daily basis to provide aid to necessary people and combat the prevalent issues in our nation. The Top NGOs in India are working to overcome the challenges of malnourishment, illiteracy, poor healthcare infrastructure, animal livelihood and many more. If you wish to support a cause an organization is working towards, but are unsure how to move forward, there are a few options available. Let’s take a closer look at each of these options: Volunteering: Volunteering your time and efforts can be a great way to get directly involved and make a difference to community members. Volunteers usually help out with daily activities at NGOs, organize fund raisers or manage the organization’s projects. Since the job description usually isn’t fixed, you’ll get to learn a lot of new hard and soft skills. A volunteering experience can help you develop problem solving skills, people management, team work and leadership. Working directly at the grass root level has also shown to bring a great sense of satisfaction to many people. However, volunteering may not be necessarily accessible to everyone. Individuals who may not have the time or resources to directly volunteer tend to make donations towards causes they support. Charitable donations: Making an education donation to a cause you believe in can be a wonderful way to make a positive impact. The most popular contributions are made in the form of monetary donations to reputable NGOs and social organizations. Online donation for charity is a hassle free path that many Indians have been taking to put their best foot forward. It is important to do adequate due diligence about the NGOs to validate their ongoing projects and accomplishments. Some organizations also accept in-kind donations in the form of books, clothes, shoes and stationery. Learning loss amidst the COVID-19 pandemic
The nation has been severely overwhelmed by the coronavirus pandemic, as the number of reported cases and deaths continue to plummet. In order to arrest the spread of the COVID-19 infections, the national authorities have decided to temporarily close down all educational institutions. As part of its nationwide lockdown, India had ordered schools and colleges to pause offline classes. This prompted institutions across the country to shift to an online, remote mode of learning. While online learning became the norm for many students in urban areas, the situation looked vastly different in low-income areas. Children residing in marginalized communities faced a number of challenges while adapting to new forms of learning. These children did not have access to electronic devices, high-speed internet, or the technological know-how to attend live online classes or the pre-recorded sessions. Study materials such as textbooks and notebooks also become suddenly unavailable to them, which significantly impacted the pace of learning. What are NGOs and charities doing to tackle the emerging issue of poor education in the country? Several charitable and social organizations felt the great damage done to the field of education amidst the ongoing health crisis. These organizations came forward to bridge the gap that emerged between children in different parts of the country. Facilitating education for poor students became a priority, as they functioned to make remote learning accessible to all. Organizations collected old laptops, tablets, and smartphones or used funds to divert them towards purchasing and distributing electronic devices to young children. These young minds resumed learning by attending online classes, interacting with teachers, and submitting tests and assignments. Children were also given a brief about how devices worked and how they could go about their school work. NGOs for children also worked alongside schools and teaching staff to prepare materials and restructuring course components that are suited to online modes of learning. Technology education and mentoring sessions were also conducted. How can you make an education donation to help more young minds in need? The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are here to stay, implying that the education system itself may completely transform. You can help facilitate real change, and help more children as online modes of learning continue to be prevalent. Education donations can be made by making direct contributions to NGOs and social organizations that are working to revitalize the space of learning in India. You can also donate old laptops, PCs, or smartphones that are not being used but are in good condition. Essential study materials such as textbooks, notebooks, and stationery can also be donated. |
